PhD Call 2026

There are two ways into the network — as a doctoral researcher or as an advisor. Recruiting runs once a year through a central process shared with ELLIS.

 

I want to join as…

  • A PhD candidate — apply through the central portal during the call.

  • An advisor — Max Planck directors and research group leaders register and nominate candidates.

Timeline

The application portal will open at the beginning of October
Here’s what a typical application cycle looks like:

  • Application portal opens

    October 1

    The online application portal becomes available, and project descriptions are published.

  • Application deadline

    October 31

    All application materials must be submitted by the deadline in November through the application portal for consideration.

  • Review phase

    November/December

  • Interviews

    January/February

    Shortlisted candidates are invited to virtual interviews with potential mentors.

  • Notification of decisions

    Late February/March

    Selected applicants receive their offers and confirm participation.

  • Program start

    there is no common start for the PhD (depends on the advisor/institution)
